Observing Shoppers Without Disrupting the Floor

Practical field notes from journey-mapping sessions that respect privacy and store operations.

Journey mapping fails when observers become part of the scene. Position near natural pause points—endcaps, demo tables, queue lines—and rotate roles so no single corner feels watched.

Pair quiet observation with short exit interviews outside the main flow. Ask about the last decision, not the whole trip. Those fragments reveal where storytelling should thicken or thin.

Share findings as annotated maps, not slide decks of statistics. Merchandisers act faster when they can see friction on the floor plan they already know.
